SCORECARD

The Game

The ‘HERB 1 Minute Challenge’ game was conceived with the help of GAA National Hurling Coordinator Paudie Butler.

Paudie Butler is a big believer in hurling practice, especially away from the club or school field. Practice at home on your own or with family & friends but practice. Paudie advocates a minimum of 200 contacts per day with a hurling ball, this should take approximately 10 minutes.

The ‘HERB 1 Minute Challenge’ is based on this principle developed by Paudie Butler.

You can practice on your own but compare yourself to your best. You can also compare your score to others including the elite county player.

Can I beat that score?

As you play against the clock a number of ‘hidden skills’ are practiced:

  1. using both sides
  2. Shortening the grip on the hurley
  3. Greater agility
  4. And many others

The day of the great, long, big pull on the ball is replaced by a short, snappy and accurate strike.

Rules of the Game

  1. Each player has 1 minute to strike as many hurling balls at ‘HERB’ as possible.
  2. Each player must stand at least 4 metres from ‘HERB’ at the Start.
  3. As the ball rebounds off ‘HERB’ the player moves and is not required to return to the Start position.
  4. If the ball rebounds past the player the player has to recover the ball-and lose time.
  5. If the player misses the target, ie ‘HERB’ s/he has to recover the ball-and lose time.
  6. If the ball strikes the ‘HERB’ Frame, the player has to recover the ball-and lose time.
  7. If the ball travels under the ‘HERB’ Frame, the player has to recover the ball-and lose time.

Remember, both sides of ‘HERB’ can be used at the same time, allowing 2 players to play the 1 Minute Challenge!

  • Accurate and snappy striking
  • 1st touch control
  • Using both sides
  • Reactions
  • Agility
  • Sprinting
  • Jumping
  • Stopping
  • Running

'A fantastic hurling work-out in a minute’ - Paudie Butler
