Teams of students help us research the Reflex Game. 7 players per team, international size handball.
Rather than a tip-off, a Reflex mat is placed in the centre of the court where 2 players from each time compete for possession as the referee begins the match by throwing the ball onto the Reflex mat. Yes, it rebounds unpredictably-whichever player has the fastest reactions gains possession. The team in possession has to throw the ball onto the Reflex mat before entering the opponents half which may result in losing possession. This is a massive incentive for both teams to leave deep-lying defensive positions as they compete for the ball and makes the game very open and very exciting.
