Cork’s Brian Murphy talks about hurling
Welcome Brian. This is an important part of the hurling year as we approach the Allianz National Hurling League Final, Cork v Galway and the Munster Championship date with Tipperary.
First of all Brian, how is your fitness?
Its improving. We had a pre-season where for about 5 weeks we did a lot of work on stamina, building up the reserves that will be needed in any hurling year. For the past number of weeks the training is more ball-related-and much faster. The ground is getting firmer and the ball starts to fly so it is all ball work.
What is the weekly schedule for a Club player?
At our Club Bride Rovers and with most Clubs, the players train Tuesday/Thursday with a match at the weekend
What is the weekly schedule for a County player?
Like the majority of counties we train on the field about twice a week-maybe Tuesday/Thursday-with a gym session on Monday/Wednesday and a match at the weekend
Do you practice outside these team sessions?
Absolutely, like most players I’d do some practice on my own. Working on striking and first touch.
What skills do you practice?
Before getting the ‘HERB’ I used the wall and practiced striking off both sides. However because of the ‘HERB’ I have the option of increasing the tension so the ball rebounds faster. I also use the tilt, so the ball comes at me high & low-a typical match situation.
So, you are happy with the ‘HERB’?
I’m just not saying it because I’m talking to you but I find it excellent.
What is your best score in the ‘HERB 1 Minute Shoot-Out’?
38
How many windows have you broken since you started using ‘HERB’ here at home?
None. Yet!
Brian, we also know you as a Coaching Development Officer with Cork. What is your one tip for teachers, coaches and players?
If I had one-and there are so many-it is to carry out drills at match pace and match intensity.
Thank you Brian for your time and we wish you a successful hurling year
